Friday 7 November - 11am Speaker: Lucas Nunes Vieira (University of Bristol)Title: On the Frontline of Multilingual Communication: Uses of AI Translation in UK Public Services Abstract: This talk draws on a survey of over 2,500 UK public service professionals. It considers the delicate balance of risks and benefits of using machine/AI translation in frontline communication tasks, particularly in healthcare and social work. In some cases, AI is used for tasks that would never have been undertaken by professional linguists. Here, the technology fills a gap. In other cases, translation tools are used in high-risk interactions where professional linguists should ideally be involved, which raises complex ethical questions. I examine some of the ethical dilemmas of AI translation in the public sector to highlight factors to consider in policymaking and in future research.
