Title

The Lighthill Report on Artificial Intelligence.

Abstract

In 1973 the Science Research Council (predecessor of EPSRC) invited Sir James Lighthill, an applied mathematician from Cambridge University, to prepare a report on the state of Artificial Intelligence. The resulting report was very controversial and extremely negative. It led to a drastic reduction in funding for AI, not just in the UK, but across the World - the, so called, AI Winter. I had just come to Edinburgh in 1971 so, as a young AI researcher, I have vivid memories of this period. At the request of Jacques Fleuriot, I will give a personal account of it.
