This is known as job shop scheduling and is a well known NP-hard optimization problem that has been studied since the 1960s, resulting in long-standing technological solutions (most commonly using Genetic Algorithms). However, manufacturing trends have been moving towards "agile manufacturing", i.e. discrete, small-batch production of highly customised products. In this context, many of the assumptions made in the standard formulation of the job shop problem are no longer valid, as the parameters of the problem and its environment are constantly changing. In this talk, I will describe a new context for the job shop scheduling problem and suggest an approach towards approximate, but pragmatic solutions. The approach relies on the abundance of available data drawn from a network of interconnected machines, devices, sensors, and people that forms the so-called Industrial Internet-of-Things (IIoT). Coupled with workflow management, this can help produce a comprehensive, real-time view of everything going on in the manufacturing floor, enabling the potential for timely adaptive and predictive decision support, as well as the coordination of different departments and teams. Our recently developed DigiFlow infrastructure for IIoT-enabled industrial workflow management will form the basis for the development of novel local optimization algorithms and techniques, with an aim towards reactive/predictive scheduling. The suggested work will form the core of my planned NIA grant proposal, so I would welcome comments and feedback in that context.
