Yet the benefits of such learning practices rarely materialize without a human teacher that is actively monitoring the students. I will present several studies that address this gap by combining supervised learning with visualization methods to improve teachers’ abilities to monitor and support students’ learning. I will show how this approach can be augment existing online collaborative environments, by identifying critical moments in students’ group learning as well as analyzing their behavior in collaborative course forums.
