AIAI Seminar - 3 April 2023 - Talks by Longfei Chen and Ricardo Contreras Speaker: Longfei Chen Title: A Camera-Based System for Monitoring Elderly Individuals at Home Abstract: As the population continues to age, innovative solutions are needed to support the independence of elderly individuals and monitor their health status. This study proposes a camera-based system designed to monitor elderly individuals living alone in their homes. The system detects unexpected long-time room occupancy and body inactivity, which may indicate potential health concerns such as falls, stroke, or heart attack. In addition, we also investigate the use of behavioral and environmental features to infer long-term health changes, such as motor ability decline caused by common conditions like dementia or Parkinson's disease. Our proposed system addresses privacy concerns while being adaptable to different home environments. This camera-based system has the potential to promote the independence and well-being of elderly individuals, while providing crucial health detection in the comfort of their own home. Speaker: Ricardo Contreras Title: Understanding Activities of Daily Living in Later Life Abstract: Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) are tasks that people perform on a day-to-day basis covering essential (physical) needs. These activities vary according to the environment/subject context, or the way in which an activity itself is accomplished. Establishing whether an ADL is performed as expected allows for not only for the identification of deviations, but also potential interventions. In this talk I will present the research we have conducted on ADLs, focusing on people in their later life, as part of the Advance Care Research Centre (ACRC) programme. I will discuss the extraction and symbolic encoding of properties (using linear temporal logic) and the use of a rigorous and systematic approach (model checking) to surface deviations.
