Forum access for Final Year Project students

Key safety, access, and conduct guidelines for Final Year Project students working in the Informatics Forum. This page covers fire safety, first aid, building access, housekeeping, and security, along with emergency procedures and facilities. Students must read and confirm understanding before beginning work.

  • Fire alarm tested 11.30 Thursdays – other times, or continuous alarm, evacuate using nearest route.
  • Upon commencing work in an area, identify your local escape route.  Your Informatics contact should point this out to you, but if in doubt, follow green ‘running man’ overhead signage.
  • Do not use lifts, collect belongings, or re-enter the building until the Fire Co-ordinator deems it safe to do so.
  • Doors and windows should be closed when you evacuate.
  • Fire doors must be closed when a room is unoccupied.
  • Keep stairwells and fire escapes/routes clear.

  • Check signage for details of local first aider to contact; or dial 51 5661 (internal phone) or 0131 651 5661 to summon a first aider via reception.  If none are available and you think assistance is required, dial (9)111 for NHS 24, non-emergency assistance or (9)999 to request an ambulance.
  • You MUST inform your Informatics contact of any accidents or near-misses, however minor.
  • First aid boxes available throughout buildings in coffee points and kitchens.  Defibrillator at reception.

  • Access is permitted during core working hours only, Mon-Fri 8.30am to 5pm.
  • Enter and exit through reception. If your meeting runs beyond 5pm use the Pend or Charles Street doors to exit.
  • Your Informatics contact should advise you of any hazards relevant to the area you are visiting.
  • No smoking anywhere on site.
  • Unisex toilets are available on every floor, and men’s/women’s facilities on the ground floor.
  • Drinking water, fridges, microwaves, etc, are available in kitchens on floors 1-5.
  • Priority for use of the lifts should be given to those with mobility issues and/or those transporting goods that cannot be safely moved by the stairs.

  • Clean up spills, no matter how small, immediately.
  • All waste must be disposed of in to waste bins in communal areas. Office bins will not be emptied by cleaning staff.
  • Any issues with the building or services should be emailed to the Forum Issues email address.

  • Carry your UoE student card at all times to gain access and for easy identification.
  • Do not allow anyone to tailgate you as you enter or leave the Forum.
  • You may not bring visitors to the Forum.

Should you have any medical conditions which may affect you (eg epilepsy, asthma, significant allergies etc) it is advisable to disclose these to your contact so that appropriate action can be taken in case of emergency.
