Professor Ursula Martin named Dame in King’s Birthday Honours

[14/06/2025] Ursula Martin, Professor Emerita of the School of Informatics, has been appointed Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) in the 2025 King’s Birthday Honours for services to Science and Education.

I am delighted and humbled to receive this honour. I truly appreciate my good fortune in working with colleagues from so many disciplines within and beyond the UK, in organisations ranging from high-tech companies to libraries and museums.

This recognition celebrates her outstanding contributions to computer science and her long-standing advocacy for diversity in STEM. 

A legacy of logic, leadership, and inclusion in computing

Dame Ursula is a steadfast advocate and mentor for women in computer science and mathematics, leading initiatives in the UK and US. 

She is known for her work in formal methods and the social impact of computing.  

She led initiatives such as Women@CL and served on national advisory bodies including the Royal Society’s Diversity Committee and the UK Defence Science Advisory Council. 

Her academic career includes roles at Cambridge, St Andrews, Queen Mary University of London, Royal Holloway, and the University of Illinois. She is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, the Royal Society of Edinburgh, and the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications. 

Her research spans algebra, logic, and the cultural history of computing, including the first scholarly study of Ada Lovelace’s mathematics. 

Dame Ursula retired in January 2023. During her time at Edinburgh, she worked jointly at Oxford University, where she is a Professor Emerita of Mathematics and Fellow of Wadham College.
