[2016] Informatics Professor Jon Oberlander has been made a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. A PhD alumnus of the University, Prof Oberlander joins a prestigious Fellowship of almost 1,650 individuals who have each demonstrated significant achievements in a broad range of fields. Royal Society of Edinburgh The Royal Society of Edinburgh is an independent educational charity, created in 1783 by Royal Charter for “the advancement of learning and useful knowledge.” Its first meetings were held in what was the library wing of the University of Edinburgh, before the organisation moved George Street. Candidates for Fellowship are nominated by existing Fellows. Each candidature undergoes a rigorous five-stage annual selection process which culminates in a ballot of the whole Fellowship.
