[2019] Two School of Informatics alumni have gone on to win Startup of the Year at the 2019 Scottish Tech Startup Awards for their company Speech Graphics Michael Berger and Dr Gregor Hofer, who studied at the University’s School of Informatics 2009 – 2012 and 2004 – 2011 respectively, founded their technology company Speech Graphics in 2010. Speech Graphics specialises in facial animation technology used in the entertainment industry, and works with many prestigious clients such as Warner Brothers and Def Jam Recordings. The Startup of the Year award is the company’s latest in a series of wins over the past few years, including the John Logie Baird Award for Innovation, an LT-Innovate Award, and two game industry awards in 2015: a Develop Award for Best Creative Outsourcer and a TIGA Award for Best Animation Supplier. Speech Graphics has also received numerous development grants, the most recent being £2 million in funding last October. The Scottish Tech Startup Awards started in 2018 to recognise the innovative individuals and organisations that are shaping Scotland’s tech landscape today. Hosted at Edinburgh’s Jam House, this year’s event drew over 500 people to celebrate the incredible technological work happening across Scotland.
