[2020] The University of Edinburgh is announced the winners of the 2020 Europe Major League Hacking (MLH) Season, coming first out of 150 Universities across eighteen Hackathon events. Image Hack the Burgh VI The latest MLH Europe Hackathon Season ran from August 2019 to July 2020 and saw over six thousand participants, who created over a thousand projects. The University of Edinburgh came top across the year, followed by the University of Birmingham in second and the University of Manchester in third. Universities earn points throughout the season through a combination of Merit points, earned by building winning projects; and Participation points, which students earn by taking part in hackathons. MLH credit Edinburgh’s hackathon Hack the Burgh VI, which took place at the University in February, as the cause of a huge increase in the number of Edinburgh students taking part in MLH events. Due to Covid-19, the event was one of the last in-person hackathons to take place during this MLH Europe Hackathon season. Perhaps due to the shift to virtual hackathons this year, the University of Edinburgh has seen a spike in the number of student hackers taking part in MLH events, helping their victory. Hack the Burgh VI Hack the Burgh is one of the oldest hackathon events in Europe and enjoyed its sixth iteration in 2020, its largest ever. Over 200 students from around the globe participated in the event, held at the Informatics Forum on the weekend of 29th February- 1st March. Any student over 18 in full-time education or graduates who graduated up to year ago was eligible to participate in a team of up to four competitors. Experience is not required as the event was aimed at both pro-hackers and beginners, providing learning and mentoring opportunities. Major League Hacking MLH is the official student hackathon league throughout the world. An organisation for hackers, by hackers, each year the team support over 200 weekend-long invention competitions that inspire innovation, cultivate communities and teach computer science skills to more than 65,000 students globally.
