He currently serves as Director of the Generative AI Laboratory (GAIL) at the University of Edinburgh. His research addresses the challenges faced by autonomous systems operating in complex, human‑centred environments. This includes work on learning‑based prediction and planning, motion synthesis, explainability, trustworthiness, and the governance of autonomous systems. His research has been supported by major funding bodies including UKRI, the EU, the Royal Academy of Engineering, the Royal Society, DARPA and DSTL.Within the University of Edinburgh, Professor Ramamoorthy also serves as Director of the Centre for AI in Assistive Autonomy, established through his UKRI Turing AI World‑Leading Researcher Fellowship. He was Director of the Institute for Perception, Action and Behaviour (IPAB) in the School of Informatics from 2020 to 2024, and holds leadership roles in several multi‑university initiatives, including the UKRI AI CDT in Dependable and Deployable AI for Robotics and the AI Hub for Productive Research and Innovation in Electronics.Professor Ramamoorthy joined the University of Edinburgh in 2007. Prior to this, he completed his PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin, and has held visiting academic positions at Stanford University and the University of Rome “La Sapienza”. Between 2017 and 2020, he served as Vice President at autonomous vehicle start‑up FiveAI, and subsequently as Scientific Advisor until its acquisition by Bosch GmbH. Professor Mahesh Marina FRSE Professor Marina holds a Personal Chair of Networked Systems in the School of Informatics at the University of Edinburgh. He holds or has held visiting professor and researcher roles at Johns Hopkins University (Computer Science), ETH Zurich, and Ofcom, the UK’s telecoms regulator. He was a Turing Fellow at the Alan Turing Institute from 2018–2023 and previously served as Director of the Institute for Computing Systems Architecture (ICSA) within Informatics from 2018–2022.Before joining the University of Edinburgh, he completed a two‑year postdoctoral appointment at the UCLA Computer Science Department, after earning his PhD in Computer Science from the State University of New York at Stony Brook. He is an IEEE Fellow and an ACM Distinguished Member. RSE Fellows The Royal Society of Edinburgh was founded in 1783 and brings together around 1,800 Fellows.
