Two Informatics academics elected Fellows of the Royal Society of Edinburgh

Professors Subramanian (Ram) Ramamoorthy and Mahesh Marina from the School of Informatics have been elected as Fellows of the Royal Society of Edinburgh (RSE), Scotland’s National Academy.

The RSE has announced its 2026 intake of Fellows, recognising 43 individuals for excellence in their disciplines and for their commitment to advancing knowledge for the public good. The Fellowship draws together leading researchers, professionals and public figures from across academia, business and public service in Scotland and beyond.

The School of Informatics warmly congratulates both colleagues on this significant honour.

Professor Subramanian Ramamoorthy FRSE

Professor Ramamoorthy holds a Personal Chair of Robot Learning and Autonomy in the School of Informatics and is Director of the Institute for Perception, Action and Behaviour. He is also an Executive Committee Member of the Edinburgh Centre for Robotics and a Turing Fellow at the Alan Turing Institute.

His research focuses on robot learning and decision‑making under uncertainty, with particular emphasis on safe and robust autonomy in human‑centred environments. He leads the UKRI Research Node on Trustworthy Autonomous Systems Governance and Regulation and has attracted funding from EPSRC, the European Commission, DARPA, DSTL and the Royal Academy of Engineering.

Professor Mahesh Marina FRSE

Professor Marina is a Professor of Networked Systems in the School of Informatics and serves as Director of the Institute for Computing Systems Architecture (ICSA).

His research spans wireless networks, mobile systems, data privacy, applied machine learning and network security, with a recent focus on future 5G and beyond mobile networks, mobile sensing and privacy. He is particularly interested in the application of machine learning to improve robustness, automation and service quality in large‑scale network infrastructures. He is a Distinguished Member of the ACM and a Senior Member of the IEEE.

RSE Fellows

The Royal Society of Edinburgh was founded in 1783 and brings together around 1,800 Fellows. Its Fellowship supports interdisciplinary collaboration, independent advice to policymakers, and the application of knowledge for societal benefit.
