Distinguished Lecture: Delivering Measurable Patient Outcomes with AI

Modern healthcare systems face severe systemic challenges, including rising chronic disease burden, staffing shortages, and escalating financial pressures. Addressing these hurdles requires a paradigm shift from reactive care in traditional settings toward predictive, preventative, and patient-centric digital models. This presentation explores how artificial intelligence (AI) and digital health solutions translate into measurable clinical value, using real-world case studies that demonstrate significant improvements in diagnostic accuracy, operational efficiency, and disease management. Furthermore, the use of digital biomarkers in clinical trials can accelerate drug development whilst reducing costs and patient burden. Finally, we will discuss key technical and structural enablers, including data sovereignty and reuse, AI regulatory frameworks, and the implementation of ethical AI solutions in healthcare.

The lecture will be followed by an opportunity for questions and discussion.

Bryn Roberts is Global Head of Data, Analytics & Research at Roche Information Solutions, where he leads data strategy, data engineering, data science, research and innovation for healthcare information solutions and digital products.

Bryn gained his BSc and PhD in pharmacology from the University of Bristol, UK. Following post-doctoral work in neuropharmacology, he commenced a career in industry at Organon, with subsequent roles at Zeneca and AstraZeneca, before joining Roche as Global Head of Scientific Methods and Algorithm Development and Informatics Site Head Basel for Pharma Research. For a decade Bryn was the Global Head of Operations and Informatics for Roche Pharma Research & Early Development, before taking on his current role as Global Head of Data, Analytics & Research for Roche Information Solutions.

Beyond Roche, Bryn is Aegis Professor of Digital Health at the University of Bristol and a Bynum Tudor Fellow at the University of Oxford, with research and teaching interests in AI in lifescience and healthcare, personalized medicine, remote patient monitoring, health informatics, and systems biology. He is a member of the Swiss Science Council and serves on several academic and research advisory boards.
