Informatics Graduate School funding opportunities

You will find information about funding opportunities available via the School of Informatics for both Home and Overseas applicants on this page, including funding from the Informatics Graduate School (IGS), the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council Doctoral Training Programme (EPSRC DTP) and the Edinburgh Doctoral College Scholarship (EDCS).

Studentships

Every year the Informatics Graduate School (IGS) has responsibility for awarding a number of PhD scholarships to Institute-led PhD applicants applying to start their degree the following academic year. These studentships are:

  • Informatics Graduate School (IGS) PhD studentships, funded locally by the School of Informatics
  • Edinburgh Doctoral College Scholarships (EDCS), funded centrally by the University of Edinburgh
  • Studentships offered as part of the EPSRC DTP, funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council

In total IGS usually has 12-16 studentships to award each year (the allocation varies year on year and is currently not known for 2025 entry).

Each of these studentships provides:

  • Tuition fees for three years (Home or Overseas rate)
  • Fourth year matriculation fee
  • Stipend at UKRI level (£19,237 for 2024/25, subject to annual increment) for three and a half years
  • Entitlement to paid leave (illness, maternity, etc.) in line with UKRI terms and conditions

The studentships do not include:

  • Any visa, Immigration Health Surcharge or relocation costs and these costs are the responsibility of the recipient
  • A fixed amount of research training and support grant

Candidates who meet or are expected to meet the entry requirements and have identified a supervisor (as described on each Institute-led PhD Degree Finder page) will be reviewed by their selected Research Institute. This will normally involve an interview with your supervisor and the Institute Academic Selector, which may take place in person or online.

These studentships are highly competitive; therefore, the quality and completeness of your application is of the utmost importance. Time spent finding highly supportive referees, writing a high-quality research proposal and gathering all your transcripts and certificates BEFORE applying will pay off.

The Informatics Graduate School (IGS) will convene several Selectors meetings in the first few months of 2025.

We will aim to communicate outcomes by April 2025. If there are delays, we recommend you start with logging in to your Applicant Hub in order to ascertain that we are not waiting for any missing documents from you, then contact your supervisor for information, and if neither of these actions help, please contact IGS and we will help.
